Alabama Defines What It Means to be a Great Football Program

Until Alabama falls to a vastly inferior opponent, they will continue to be the best team in the nation, with the best coach, ahead of the best program. And even when they do fall to a team they should handily beat, I think it’s still a tight race between Alabama and whatever other traditional powerhouse is showing its teeth that season.

What makes Alabama great is not just talent. LSU has gobs of it, USC swims in it, apparently Oregon and Ohio State pay for it… there are lots of teams with talent. College football comes down to one thing more often than anything else – the one constant in an endless turnstile of soon to be professional football stars – is your coach better than the guy on the other sideline.

Unlike Les Miles, Nick Saban has never needed luck to beat an opponent. He hasn’t needed the best player in college football history like Urban Meyer or Gene Chizik. Every so often Saban’s teams are out played, even ill-fated, never are they out-coached. Read more »

I’m back from getting my stitches taken out and the podcast is back. Arkansas needs to find their feet in the running game between now and September 24th when they play Alabama. Adam Alter of KNWA and Chris Bahn of Arkansas Sports 360 both break down what is ahead for Arkansas. We also talk about Texas A&M to the SEC and why Baylor is trying to make sure it doesn’t happen.

Today on the show we asked the question, “What does it take to get into the Hall of Fame?” This spawned a debate about the great players of old vs the modern player. Who would you take? A Hall of Fame team from the 70s backwards or a team made up of the NFL’s current best? TJ will take the new guys every time.  Bobby Petrino fully expects his offensive line to learn everything they need to before the start of the season and be ready for Arkansas run. Michael Felder of InTheBleachers.net joined the show to talk about the SEC this season. Jimmy Carter of CBSsports.com came on and updated us on Arkansas at practice so far.

Bobby Petrino’s “We didn’t come to Paint,” quote has now been immortalized as a trademark of the University of Arkansas. Arkansas is one of the best teams in the nation on paper, but that isn’t what lost them games last season and it likely won’t be the determining factor in whether they win a national title this season. Also, why is Alabama making a big deal out of a minor issue. The suit story that just won’t go away. What does Mike Brown of Cincinnati gain by forcing Carson Palmer to retire? RSVP: Long Term Solution or A Lot of Hot Air?

Arkansas recently announced the fruits of their labor in fundraising after implementing their new R.S.V.P. initiative. RSVP (Razorback Seat Value Plan) was implemented to improve the amount of revenue the football program earns for the entire Athletic Department. Arkansas and Jeff Long estimated the plan would generate around $5 million in additional revenue. The Razorback foundation exceeded that estimate to the tune of $6.5 million and were very proud of that fact.  Read more »
