TJ Carpenter: An SEC Welcome

@TJCarpenterWHB – tj@810whb.com – This is my first blog post. I’m new to Kansas City and WHB and I have to say, I couldn’t feel more welcome in the City of Fountains; nice people, great barbeque, and it feels pretty cool to be on the strongest sports radio signal in the country. That being said, I’m an SEC guy and if you’re a Mizzou fan, don’t expect to feel as welcome in your new home as I feel in mine.

I was talking with a lifelong Jayhawk fan last night about the unmistakable pride (and some would argue arrogance) SEC fans have in their conference. It’s a pride that has made members of other conferences feel obligated to develop some of the same in their own; but it never is the same. By now, you’ve probably heard the most repeated phrase from people in SEC country when trying to explain what exactly makes their brand of football so superior in every single way, “It’s just different here in the South.” And that was his biggest complaint, “what exactly don’t I understand? You say it’s different, how?”
Well I’ll explain it to you. You may not want to believe it, you may not want to accept it, but in the end you’ll experience it for yourself. When that happens, you’ll both believe and accept it and want to grow to be a part of it.

Wade, Humphrey, Peterson likely gone – Hog Baseball falls short of expectations

@TJCarpenterShow – tj@hogsportsradio.com - The Razorback Football team will likely lose three players involved in a burglary earlier this month. I believe in second chances, but it doesn’t look like these three will get one, whereas Jason Peacock who was involved in something similar has made the most of his. Marquel Wade, the most talented of the bunch, is a big loss for the Razorbacks, but as Hog fans have learned multiple times this spring, sometimes principle comes before winning.

Razorbacks get some big recruits in-state and upgrade the Jumbotron

@TJCarpenterShowtj@hogsportsradio.com – Arkansas is upgrading their stadium video board to the size of a moon crater and they also picked up some great recruits from Fayetteville. (By the way, @JohnL_Smith might be unhealthily obsessed with the new video board) The ability to pick up solid recruits without a long-term head coach is essential in maintaining program stability and continuing to build for the future. With this strategy of hitting in-state hard now, and finalizing out of state later may just be the perfect fix for the Razorbacks.

PODCAST: Outrage over Ohio State’s weak sentence; How to get Hog fans believing in Basketball again ; Tebow has the right backing

@TJCarpenterShow tj@hogsportsradio.com

Today on the show we talk about the recent ruling to give Ohio State a one year bowl ban and loss of scholarships and how the NCAA didn’t do nearly enough to punish the program, how it is essentially an indication of corruption in the Bowl system and the NCAA in general, and the hypocritical era of college football. Tim Tebow now has John Elway’s backing, but no one else. Jim Harbaugh proved he should be considered an elite coach in the making. How does the Razorback Basketball program get fans to believe again and go to the games? We talk with Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, Otis Kirk of 24/7 Sports, and John Engleman of KFSM Channel 5.

PODCAST: Arkansas Basketball is going to take some time to rebuild, Elway knows Tebow is here to stay

The Razorback Basketball program needs some help. Attendance is down, fans are concerned and the after all the program has been through there has been little good news yet when it comes to what the team is and is not capable of this season without their best player and little veteran leadership from Marshawn Powell. John Elway (pictured here when he played a double in Back to the Future II) knows Tim Tebow is a long term solution because of what he does for Denver’s relevancy in the NFL nation-wide, even if he won’t admit it. We break down the NBA before Free Agency starts and the NFL playoff picture. The Texans may have been super bowl contenders without all the injuries, but the just had to sign Jake Delhomme. I can’t take any team who signs Jake Delhomme seriously. As MJD of Yahoo Sports Shutdown Corner put it, “Jake Delhomme isn’t a quarterback, he’s a cry for help.” We talk with John Engleman of KFSM Channel 5 and Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports about the bowl picture and what Hogs are and aren’t going pro.

PODCAST: A final word on Joe Paterno’s firing, Corey Beck, and Razorback Hoops

Today on the show I get a final word in on Joe Paterno’s expected and called for firing. Would you take the Penn State job if you were a coach? I also talk about Razorback Basketball and what to expect this season. Author of the new book, “Three and Out” stops by. Corey Beck talks about the Razorbacks basketball season and David Ubben of ESPN discusses what moves to the SEC mean for Texas A&M and Missouri.

TJ Carpenter: Arkansas owns South Carolina Historically

by TJ Carpenter

Arkansas didn’t look good against Vanderbilt this past weekend. In fact, the Razorbacks haven’t looked good for four straight quarters since a game against New Mexico in Little Rock in the second week of the season.

But Arkansas is 7-1 and fans shouldn’t be worried.

Why? Because Arkansas plays South Carolina this weekend. There are some programs that simply have the number of others; Arkansas as a team and as a program has always had South Carolina’s.

In a season overshadowed by SEC expansion, both programs have grown tremendously since joining the conference themselves two decades ago. It’s easy to compare South Carolina and Arkansas because both are so similar. However, their success and how each has built upon it is very different.

Since joining the SEC, Arkansas and South Carolina have played to a 12-7 series record favoring Arkansas. What is interesting about the seven losses Arkansas has suffered to South Carolina is when those losses came. Every season the Razorbacks lost to the Gamecocks they finished the season at or below .500. Arkansas is currently 7-1. If Arkansas finishes the season with a winning record, which it will, it will likely include a win over the Gamecocks. Read more »

PODCAST: Brady saves the day, Is Arkansas subject to a bias?

Arkansas is not the greatest on defense. But neither are several teams ranked ahead of them. So why is Arkansas’ defense made such an issue of when Oklahoma St, Oregon and Clemson’s defenses aren’t? Tom Brady proves why he’s elite and Romo proves why he isn’t. Is a big picture approach making doing some of the smaller execution things more difficult for the Cowboys? Is a lack of supports for Primetime at the Palace an indication Mike Anderson doesn’t have adequate support from the fans? I don’t think so. Chris Bahn and Robbie Neiswanger talk Razorbacks and John Davis of the Oxford Eagle previews the Ole Miss game.

PODCAST: Arkansas defeats Auburn easily, eyes LSU at the end of the tunnel

Arkansas made quick work of the Auburn Tigers and now look towards the second half of the season highlighted by a matchup with LSU at the end of the season. Should OU fans feel slighted by the associated press? Tim Tebow’s reign as begun in Denver. Green Bay is just too good. Chris Bahn of Arkansas Sports 360 and Robbie Neiswanger of the Arkansas News Bureau talk Razorbacks.
